2-DAY HANDS-ON WORKSHOP

Two days of hands-on training in a small group, with a practical focus.  I show and tell you absolutely everything I know about flash, not just in my wedding work, but in all areas of my photography. And you shoot, a lot.

No secrets held back, no jargon, no portfolios – just me, a bunch of you, a bunch of flashes and accessories, and two days of practical photography.

Killashee House Hotel is ideally located just 30kms from Dublin City Centre, 2kms outside Naas Town, & only 45mins from Dublin Airport.  It”s easily accessible by car from the M9, M7, M4 and M50 and a 15 minute taxi journey from Sallins and Naas train station.

DAY 1 – Taking control of flash photography

On the first day we bring it right back to basics and consider why adding light to a scene requires you to think about exposure in a new way.  Whether you’ve used flash off-camera before, or you’ve never used flash at all (or perhaps never really understood how to make it work, even if it has worked), through a series of logical exercises I will get you thinking about light – and flash – in a methodical and foolproof way to build the foundations for everything that follows.

We start with ambient light and learn how to assess the light in a scene. We think about how we can use flash to fix problems, and how we avoid causing new ones. We work from an available light shot all the way up to a two-flash + available light portrait, introducing modifiers, colour, and technique as we go.  You do all the shooting. Working in groups of three you”ll each be photographer, model and assistant.  We”ll shoot inside and outside, and as dusk falls we”ll make the most of it to learn practical techniques for any time of year, and any light (or none), with minimal gear.

As darkness falls, we head outside into the gardens as I talk through how I light an outdoor environment at night for my trademark “A Shot In The Dark” – a night shot using multiple flashes.  You”ll work with me as we find our way to an album-worthy image in whatever circumstances we face.

By the end of this day you will be comfortable shooting an environmental portrait in any situation with a couple of flashes and a couple of portable modifiers.  But more importantly you will know how to get predictable results when adding light to a scene, no matter what the conditions.  You will know what gear you need, and why, and you”re ready to tackle any environmental portrait situation.

DAY 2 – All things wedding

On day 2 we apply all we learnt on day 1 to the particular circumstances of a wedding.  From bridal prep, ceremony, family shots, groups, bridal party portraits, drinks reception, speeches, night shot all the way to dancing shots. I will walk you through all the ways I use flash at a wedding – on and off camera, one light or more, and you”ll shoot each other in situations that mimic those of a real wedding day.\n\nAs darkness falls on Day 2, we once again head outside to a new environment where you split into groups to work your way through a creative night shot, putting all you”ve learnt over the previous 2 days into action.

Along the way, we”ll talk business too, as I tell you how I educate clients on what”s involved, why they want a night shot, and how it helps me shoot less weddings for more money.

By the end of this day you”ve added a whole new set of techniques to your bag of tricks as a wedding photographer as well as the ability to earn the cost of the workshop back from just one wedding.

To make the most of this workshop, you just need to bring a camera, lens and memory card. I bring everything else – flashes, triggers, modifiers – and as much knowledge as I can squeeze into two full days.
